So yea, once again it’s been a while; I didn’t even do a GotY for 2018, but I guess I will right now, and you can skip down if not interested. I’m not going to fluff it up, like previous years, and am just going to do a quick few notes, like I did last year. As usual, HD remasters, remakes, expansions, dlc, and re-releases are not counted, but perhaps can be their own category at another time.
2018 games I played, and enjoyed
- Monster Hunter
- Dissidia Final Fantasy NT
- Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings
- Shining Resonance Refrain
- Detroit: Become Human
- Dragon Quest XI
- Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
- Call of Cthulhu
So it’s not the longest list I’ve ever had, but I played a lot of long games last year. It might also seem obvious which I’m going to choose, both to those who know me, and those who don’t, but surprise, it’s Atelier Lydie & Suelle. Monster Hunter, and Assassin’s Creed were amazing, and Detroit blew my mind, but I’m a long, long time fan of the Atelier series, and the new story, and mechanics, added to this one were absolutely awesome.
For all the hundreds of hours, and plats, that went into those other three, I enjoyed the 100ish hours in Atelier way more. Of course, this isn’t saying the others aren’t great. I’ve already said they were, but I just had more fun elsewhere.
There are so many damn games coming out this year, and I know I won’t have the money to get to all of them. It’s just not financially viable. There are a few games that I will make an effort to get, or at least get on sale if I can, but the others will have to be rentals. I got my hands on Devil May Cry 5, and man I am having so much fun. My love for DMC is known to those who know me. I even made the DMC subreddit 6, almost 7 years ago, and that’s taken off like wildfire (just hit 30k members last week, weee).
I know I’ll never plat it, as I’ve never plat any of the DMC games (tho came very close on DmC) due to nerve damage, and arthritis in my hands, but I love them, and play them, and have fun, so it’s fine. The story is goddamn awesome, and I have zero complaints at all about it as it stands. I know it’s early, but I really don’t see a game beating this for my goty this year. Even knowing the games coming, I just don’t see how they can beat perfection. And I’ve been waiting for this game for ten years. Literally.
Tales of Vesperia’s remaster is pretty amazing. I mean, it’s more of the same, but it’s got all the stuff Japan got in their ps3 release, and better resolution, plus more voice acting. ToV was the first game I 10k’d on the 360, so it has more of a special place in my collection that another Tales remaster might. Now to get Tales of Graces on the ps4 with a remaster, please!
The best so far, besides DMC5, is Resident Evil 2’s remaster which would be incredibly close for goty 2019 if it wasn’t a remake. It’s so good. SO good. I am going to try to plat it so hard, but it’s brutal. The graphics are incredible, music is spot on, mechanics are very good. Resident Evil is such a good series, and I know some people don’t like all the games in the series, but I have like them all, and they continue to shine.
This year two Atelier games are also coming out, which is wild.
Ok I’m done now!
